3 month ban on selling land to people of other religions in Assam, know why Himanta government took this decision Himanta Biswa government of Assam has put a temporary ban on giving NOC for buying and selling of land between people of different religions. This ban is for three months. This decision has been taken in view of the Lok Sabha elections. It is believed that communal violence may occur through this buying and selling.

Guwahati: Assam government has issued a big order regarding sale and purchase of land. If the buyer and the seller belong to different religions, then in such a case they will not be able to get the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for three months. This ban has been imposed in view of the Lok Sabha elections. It has been said in the order that such a decision has been taken so that there is no communal tension of any kind before the Lok Sabha elections. The Revenue and Disaster Management (Registration) Department has issued this order on March 7.

The order states that efforts are being made by vested interests to create conflict on communal lines. Intelligence inputs pointed to bids at some places to fraudulently transfer land belonging to religious communities to other communities. However, the order does not specify which religious community it is referring to.

It is further written in the notification that if the District Commissioner is of the opinion that it is very important to give NOC in some cases, then conditions have been kept for it. Keeping in mind the above circumstances and also that this NOC will not lead to any violation of law and order, it can be issued with the prior consent of the Inspector General of Registration, Assam.
